Pennsylvania October Wedding

Michelle Murray (Bride) Jenkintown, PA
Leading up to my wedding day, I was set on doing the DIY thing (as many brides are nowadays to save money). I had looked up the cost of florists in the area (4-6k!) and thought there is NO way I can justify paying that much for flowers that are going to go in the trash. Being artistic I figured, "how hard can this be?" and I even took a class at a local wholesale flower distributor to see if I could learn some basics, but felt discouraged when there was an elitist vibe about the art of flower arrangements. I got even more discouraged when both my caterer and venue coordinator told me that doing my own flowers was a "bad idea." So, you could say in the days leading up to my wedding I was pretty ... nervous about how the flowers would turn out. When I found FiftyFlowers, my nerves definitely calmed. My FiftyFlowers experience was all around perfect. They have amazing customer service, the delivery process was easy and they kept me informed, and above all...a great quality product! I had looked at some of their competitor sites and found FiftyFlowers to be the most cost-effective and user-friendly. The Flower Stories with other brides sharing their process definitely helped build up my confidence again and helped me come up with a game plan. I ended up buying artificial flowers for the elements guests would not be "up close and personal," so I could reduce my workload the week of, then I let all my bridesmaids know that 2 days before the wedding I needed them to help with making centerpieces. We made a party of it with music and wine (the centerpieces started looking better as the night went on ;) ), and had a great time bonding in the process. I could tell that my bridesmaids were nervous going in, but I had prepped recipes for them to follow and made an example centerpiece for them to copy. We also made the bouquets 2 nights before and kept them in water until the morning of, which turned out fine. I think the results were wonderful, and I am so glad I chose to do the floral arrangements myself! Not only did I save about $4,000, but we got tons of compliments at the wedding. Show more

Flowers Used for Michelle Murray's Arrangements

Used for: Centerpieces , Bridal Bouquet, Bridesmaid's Bouquets , Boutonnieres, Other

I used the eucalyptus everywhere! It smelled great and really complemented the burgundy and gray-blue tones I had going on. Super hearty and easy to work with. We had a lot left over.

Used for: Centerpieces

This was an impulse buy I made at checkout, and I am sure glad I did! This greenery really added to the moody tones of my centerpieces and made the deep reds and gold on the table pop!

Used for: Centerpieces , Bridal Bouquet, Bridesmaid's Bouquets , Boutonnieres, Other

These roses were beautiful and I used them everywhere, including the boutonnieres for the men. They were a little more green in tone than I had hoped, and also took a little longer to open up...but for the bouquets they were perfect and stayed looking fresh.

Thistle Blue Flower ( 50 stems )

Used for: Centerpieces , Bridal Bouquet, Bridesmaid's Bouquets , Boutonnieres, Other

I absolutely loved the thistle. Super hearty and easy to work with, and lasted a long time. Some of the thistle was more blue (which was what I was hoping for)...and some turned out more of a sage green tone. Used this for everything...including the cake.

Used for: Bridal Bouquet, Bridesmaid's Bouquets

The amaranthus was delicate and not the easiest to work with as the stems break easily and it sheds. Once we got them wrangled into our bouquets they looked great and added a cascade feel to my bouquet.

Creamy Ivory Peony Rose ( 24 Garden Roses )

Used for: Centerpieces , Bridal Bouquet, Bridesmaid's Bouquets , Other

Probably my least favorite of the flowers I ordered, maybe because I had high hopes for the peonies. Maybe it was the time of year I ordered them, but they were much smaller than I had expected and blended in with the white spray garden roses...really with the batch I got I could not tell the difference between the two flower buds. The peony came out definitely more stark white than ivory, and pretty expensive for what it was.

Used for: Centerpieces , Bridal Bouquet, Other

This was a great focal flower to make my bouquet and the cake look special and stand out. The buds did not open as much as I would have liked, but they photographed well. I used these for the centerpieces too, which I think was a mistake because these flowers are VERY heavy and the stems are thick, so they tore up the floral foam in the centerpieces and caused some structural issues.

Used for: Centerpieces , Bridal Bouquet, Bridesmaid's Bouquets , Boutonnieres, Other

These roses opened up beautifully! Used them for everything...bouquets, centerpieces, cake decoration, and the groom's boutonniere.

Used for: Centerpieces

Used for table centerpieces. They were a great cost effective way to make the centerpieces fuller and add a more richness of color. They lasted a long time and were super easy to work with.

These roses smelled lovely. We used them for the centerpieces, bouquets, cake, and women's boutonnieres because they were smaller. We definitely had a lot left over (1-2 bunches too many).
